Studying the Bible is not an intellectual exercise! Studying the Bible:
- Helps us to draw close to God.
- Teaches us about God.
- Teaches us why we exist and our purpose.
- Teaches us how to live by faith and God’s will.
- Has the power to transform us spiritually.
- Teaches us wisdom.
- Teaches us how to live life victoriously.
- Teaches us how to live an abundant life.
Unfortunately, when we make the decision to be intentional about studying the Word, many distractions will try to interfere with our time with God. Following are some tips to help as we prepare to meet with God:
- Designate a specific place in your home that has a desk or table for writing and to position your study items on.
- Turn off all distractions: TV, radio, and cell phones.
- Be prepared each day by having your cross-reference Bible, notebook, pen, highlighter, and a Bible Commentary available. A good habit is to keep these items at the same spot every day.
- Before you begin, pray. We should always invite Holy Spirit into our study time. Ask Him for detective eyes and a mind for understanding and clarity of the Word.
When studying the Word look for:
- Key words that will give you clues about the passages of scripture being read. Research for the Hebrew or Greek definition of those words.
- The author. Who wrote these passages scriptures
- Clues as to why he wrote these passages of scripture.
- The intended audience.
Ask Yourself:
- What message is Holy Spirit revealing to you?
- How can these scripture relate to your life for change or victory?
- How can these scriptures relate to what is happening in the world now?
We must remember, the Bible was written thousands of years ago and language and culture were different then the language and culture of today. So, a cross-reference Bible and/or a Bible Commentary are excellent resources for finding answers for the questions above.
Finally, studying the Bible is a lifelong relationship with Father God. Every scripture you read has the potential to reveal new insights and deepen your understanding of God’s love and purpose for you.
Consistency is key in learning the mysteries of God’s Word. As we are faithful to commit to a regular time of meeting with Holy Spirit, He will pour into you the deep meanings of God’s Word.
Establish a routine that works for you—whether it’s daily or weekly. Start with 30 minutes per day! It’s our faithful consistency that is the key to building a habit that deepens our understanding of the Word and helps us to grow spiritually.
Financial Fitness 101: With Christmas just three months away, what are some of your ideas for gift giving this year?
With inflation hitting everyone’s pocket on a negative, have you thought about family grab bag gifts. Or, how about having family get togethers with no monetary gift exchange. Allow the gift giving to be the presence of enjoying each other’s company.
Another gift giving idea is that of presenting a gift card that you made with the promise of helping the receiver of the gift by:
- Preparing them a home cooked meal.
- Shovel the snow from their walkway for a month.
- Babysit for a couple to have a date night.
Gift-giving from the heart is more valuable than a purchase someone will never use or don’t like; or a store gift card that gets lost.
