It was Lily’s scheduled vacation day. A day she had planned to spend dedicating as alone time with just her and God.
Lily became a Christian about six months ago. Unfortunately, with her demanding job and constant fires to put out on the job she hadn’t had time to devote to Bible studying.
As she sat in her favorite grey chair, Bible and notebook in her lap, staring out the window, she was disappointed!
Feeling the heat from the sun radiating through the window, she thought “why is it so hard to understand the Bible? I can see the sun, feel the heat produced from it and understand the science behind it, but I can’t understand the words written in this Bible, why?”
Lily, continued thinking, “I did as my friend from church instructed me to do! Quiet place at home, check! Silence my phone, check! Turn off any other distractions, check! What have I missed,” she said aloud?
So what was Lily’s problem? Why was she having difficulty studying God’s Word?
In frustration, Lily called her friend and explained what happened. She told her friend how she spent an hour reading a few chapters from the Bible with no understanding of it. “What am I doing wrong,” she asked?
Lily talked with her friend for a while on the phone, when finally the problems were exposed that:
We are not to give God crumbs. He is to have priority in our lives, even with demanding jobs!
Lily randomly opened her Bible, reading chapters from a major prophet.
Lily didn’t pray, inviting God into her quiet time and to enlighten the eyes of her heart for understanding.
She tried to read advanced chapters before she learned the foundations.
Lily tried reading the Bible as a novel. She quickly learned that wasn’t the correct approach. Has this happened to you?
The Bible tells us that as “new babes” we need the milk of the word for spiritual digestion!
1. We should have dedicated time for God daily. We can all sacrifice 30 to 60 minutes a day!
2. Putting God first and asking Him to order our day is a miracle in itself!
3. Start our study time with God with prayer first asking Holy Spirit to give us a mind of understanding. Next, play a praise and worship song to calm your spirit and the atmosphere.
4. As a new Christian, begin your study each day from a devotional book written by a Biblically sound author.
5. After reading the author’s devotional, read the scripture(s) associated with the author’s devotional for that day’s reading.
6. Write the scripture(s) for that day’s reading in your journal. Next:
-Underline words (key words) or phrases you don’t understand or that gives clarity about the scripture(s).
-Lookup the Hebrew or Greek definition for the underlined words (use Google on your phone).
-Read the scripture(s) again, this time out loud, using the Hebrew or Greek definition.
-Pause and think about what you read aloud.
-Ask Holy Spirit what do the scripture(s) mean.
-In your journal, write a paragraph about what the scripture(s) mean to you.
-Record in your journal if the scriptures read is a principle, promise or a command.
-Finally, how can this scripture be applied in your life to help you grow in the Lord.
Studying the Word can be challenging, but when we make God a priority in our lives, He will give us understanding of His Word.
Studying the Word of God is not a marathon race! This should be a time of intimacy with you and God. This is quality time getting to know Father God! A time in how you will see yourself in His Word through the eyes of God.
Take your time in the safety of Father God’s presence learning of Him, and how much He loves you!
