Getting Out of The Pit

As we take a journey into the Lord’s word, I would like to share with you Psalms 40, one of my favorite Psalms.  This Psalm is a writing of God’s divine deliverance in the life of one of His children.  As we study this Psalm, we will learn that the life of a Christian is not a bowl of cherries!  Quite often we will find ourselves in a “pit!”

When the Lord saved me many years ago, I came into the Kingdom believing my entire life would magically be changed!  I thought I would no longer experience hardships and life would be so easy!  Wrong!  Boy was I in for a BIG surprise!  Psalms 40 reveals the truth of what can happen in the life of a Believer, this is why it’s one of my favorite readings.  It tells it like it is, hard times will come; but it also reveals the secret for enduring hardships, and the solution for overcoming any hardship that attacks our lives

This Psalm was written by David during a time of despair in his life.  He is praising God for His goodness and divine deliverance.

Waiting Patiently:   In verse 1 we learn that patience is the key.  Hardships will afflict Believers, but we are to patiently wait on the Lord.  This waiting doesn’t mean we are to sit idlily doing nothing.  No!  We are to get up from that bed of affliction! We are to wash our face and present ourselves as the child of the Most High God!  We are to go about our daily routines with patient confidence in the Lord that He is going to work it out.

God Hears:  The Lord hears the cries of His children!  He knows our needs, but He wants us to learn to not allow hardships or anyone to move us into fear or doubt.  No!  He wants us to “patiently” wait for Him with faith believing He will answer.  (Psalms 40:1 “I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.”)

God Rescues:  In verse 2 we learn that the Lord rescues His children.  Notice what David says, “the Lord brought him out of the horrible pit and out of the miry clay.”  The “horrible pit” represents calamity, hardships or being imprisoned in the mind due to trials.  Miry clay is likened to being in a lake of misery with no hope of deliverance!  What pit are you in today?  A pit of anger?  A pit of poor relationships?  A pit of unforgiveness?  A pit of financial lack?  A pit of poor health? A pit of loneliness?  Or A pit of despair, etc.?  Whatever pit you find yourself in, “wait patiently” on the Lord and He will pull you out of that horrible pit of hardship and misery.   He has the answers you are looking for!

God Is Our Security:  Notice what happens next!  The Lord sets David’s feet upon a rock and establishes his goings.  This rock is Jesus, He is our rock of security!  When going through hardships myself, I can testify as David, that the Lord was faithful in my life by rescuing me and giving me the assurance within my spirit that He can resolve any hardship that came my way as I waited on Him.  Setting my feet upon His Rock of assurance strengthen me for the journey I now find myself on.  As we faithfully wait on the Lord, He promises to rescue us from any affliction that attacks us.  (Psalms 40:2 “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.”)

God is Worthy Of Praise:  In verse 3, I can almost hear the David shouting praises to Almighty God for his deliverance from the despair and misery he found himself.  David testifies with a new song to all who listens how the Lord rescued him.   He tells of God’s glory and might in bringing security and peace into what he thought was a dead situation.  I can just imagine David saying something like “I was in deep despair and didn’t know how I was going to survive, but My Lord heard me as I called out to Him and He rescued me!”  He goes on to say, that when He gets done testifying all will fear God and turn their trust to God!  How awesome!  What a testimony!  At the right time and moment, the Lord rescued him and those around him witnessed this miraculous deliverance and turned their hearts to the Lord.

Doesn’t David’s testimony and praises to the Lord excite your spirit man?  Are you ready now to wait patiently on the Lord?  He will hear your cry!  I can honestly say, when I look back at my life, the Lord has been truly faithful and trustworthy, He has established my goings within His kingdom by rescuing me from financial lack; providing reliable transportation; securing stable employment; and making sure my children and I have every need met.  I can now teach His Word and share with others my testimonies of His power and might.  I never in a million years dreamed of being able to accomplish what God has called me to do – but God.  He rescued me, taught me and equipped me for this time and season in my life.  The Lord has used my life to be an inspiration to others who have now trusted in Him as Lord of their life (Psalms 40:3 “And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.”)

Trust in God For Deliverance:  Friends, until Father God calls us home, we will always experience hardships through trials or temptations, but don’t give up hope.  Verse 4 says “blessed is that man who puts his trust in God.”  Our self-will, family or friends can’t do for us what God can do.  When we put our trust in God, He will rebuke the storms in our lives!  He will supernaturally supply our areas of lack!  He will restore our health!  He will reconcile broken relationships!   Nothing is impossible with God!   (Psalms 40:4 “Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.”)

God Matures Us:  No one can do the wonderful works that God can do in our lives.  He can resurrect what we imagined to be dead, such as our hopes and dreams.  Waiting on God brings great rewards, such as, maturing one spiritually.  Our spirit man is strengthened with each trial as we trust God.  We learn to be steadfast and unmovable knowing God has everything under control.  We learn to trust God as little children because we have learned to become dependent upon Him to supply our every need.   We become assured in our spirit that God has our best interest in mind and His thoughts are innumerous towards us.  (Psalms 40:5 “Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.”)

Once again, what has you in that horrible pit of misery?  Call unto God!  He will hear you and as you wait patiently trusting Him, Father God will rescue you, leaving you with a testimony to strengthen others.   Jesus Christ death on the Cross guarantees victory for every Believer who faithfully puts their trust in Him and what He accomplished at the Cross.
