Luke 1:38 “And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.”
Mary was called by God to carry out one of the greatest assignments ever! She was chosen by God to become mother to His Son, Jesus! Why did God choose Mary? Scriptures doesn’t tell us, but Mary’s response to Gabriel in Luke 1:38 gives us a hint as to the answer – she was a young maiden of “faith!” Why is this information important to know? Because, during Biblical days it was a disgrace to be a single maiden found pregnant. For instance, when Judah learned that his daughter-in-law Tamar was with child, he ordered her to be burnt (Genesis 38:24).
Mary’s pregnancy would put her in a dangerous position. She could possibility face stoning or face shunning from the community, or worse yet, loose her soon to be husband, Joseph. But, by faith, Mary’s words to Gabriel were, “be it unto me according to your word,” so with “faith” Mary chose to be obedient and allowed God Almighty to do as spoken.
Mary knew the prophecies of old, she knew of the coming Messiah. The prophet Isaiah spoke that the deliverer would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14). What an honor, she thought, to become mother to the Son of the Most High God! This honor is worth any trial that I will ever face, she thought!
Did God select the right person to become mother to His only begotten Son? Yes! I believe God selected the right person. To live in the 1st century and to be found pregnant without a husband was life threatening. For Mary to say yes to Gabriel was evidence that she was a young maiden of great faith and love for God.
If you were faced with a life threatening choice what would you do? What is God trying to “birth” through you? Mary chose to say “yes” and follow God allowing Him to do what He does best – guide and protect His children when they say “Yes!” Will you say “yes” to the Lord?
