The Names of God – El Elyon

Have you ever been in a situated in which someone had power over your life’s situations or decision-making?  How did this make you feel?  Did you feel trapped, helpless or hopeless? Today, we are going to journey into the Word of God and learn another awesome character of God’s name, which is “El Elyon!”  El Elyon means “the LORD God Most High!” El is the abbreviated form of Elohim (Creator of Heaven and earth) and Elyon means “highest or as the most.”  We will learn today that the LORD has the “final say” in our lives!

We are introduced to El Elyon in Genesis 14.  Holy Spirit records the account of four (4) kings waging war against the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah and two others kings.  The reason for the war is that the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah and the two other kings rebelled against king Chedorlaomer and the other three (3) kings with him.  Chedlorlaomer and the three kings prevailed against Sodom and Gomorrah and took everyone captive, including the kings and all their possessions.  These kings and the people were heathens, so what is so importance about this war that Holy Spirit took the time to record this story?  The answer!  Lot and his family were living in Sodom!  Lot and his family and all his possessions were taken captive also.  Now just imagine Lot’s thoughts!  Captured by the enemy, his life’s decisions now in the control of someone else!  “Will I be enslaved by the enemy for the remainder of my life,” he thought!  Little did he know that El Elyon was watching this event and had the final say over his life!

News was taken to Abraham that his relative, Lot, was captured and in enemy hands.  Abraham, trusting in El Elyon, took 318 trained men from his camp to rescue Lot and his family.  The Word of God says “he pursued after the enemy.”  Commentators state Abraham and his servants pursued after the enemy for 240 miles.   Genesis 14:15:16 states that Abraham prevailed over Chedlorlaomer and the three kings.  Abraham, with supernatural help from El Elyon, rescued Lot, his family and all his goods and the other people taken captive.

Those in Covenant relationship with El Elyon have nothing to fear nor nothing to worry about.  Abraham was well aware of the LORD as Jehovah Jireh and now discovers the LORD as his El Elyon the Most High God of Heaven and earth, the God that performs all things for those in Covenant relationship with Him.  (Psalm 57:2 reads: “I will cry unto God Most High; unto God that performeth all things for me.”)  Abraham trusted the LORD for victory.

We too can trust the LORD for victory in our lives when others think they have power over our lives or life’s decisions.  We can call upon our LORD El Elyon to intervene on our behalf to destroy the works of the enemy against us.

Several years ago, I experienced firsthand El Elyon’s guidance and victory in my life.  I was laid off by the company I am now retired from.  I remember it as if it were yesterday!  On January 25, 1999, the company I worked for was closing down the facility I worked at.  On that day, I was given the news of being laid off by one of my supervisors.  As I walked to the personnel office to receive my walking papers, many thoughts of fear raced through my mind such as, how will I support my children, how will I pay my mortgage, etc.  Little did I know or realize before I walked into the personnel office on that life changing day, that El Elyon, already knew beforehand the events of my layoff and that He already worked out my future with this company; it never crossed my mind that I would retire from the same company that had just laid me off minutes earlier.  Friends, I thought the company I worked for had control over my future, but El Elyon proved to me that day that He has the last say about my future.

What situation has you fearful or feeling hopeless?  What doors are closed to you that need opened?  Are you in need of a job?  Struggling financially!  Put your faith in El Elyon and stop focusing on the problem!  Our LORD God Most High is possessor of Heaven and earth, Creator of everything and everyone, which means those who are in covenant relationship with Him can trust Him to perform all things on their behalf as they believe (Psalms 57:2).  Second Chronicles 16:9 encourages us as follows: “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew Himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him…”  The LORD is always looking for ways to meet the needs of His children.  Don’t doubt the LORD’s ability to answer your requests or to rescue you from those who think they have power over you!  The same El Elyon who rescued Lot, his family all his possession, etc. will come to your rescue.  Remember, El Elyon has the last say about what happens in your life.
