While on my way to my grandson’s Parent/Teacher Conference I had an opportunity to listen to the opening remarks of Dr. David Jeremiah’s message on “Giving.” Anyone familiar with Dr. Jeremiah’s teaching and preaching, you know he always begins with Christian Humor. His humor on giving had me rolling with laugher in the car, it was as follows: Three men were conversing on their method for giving of their finances to God. The first man said “I draw a circle on the ground, then throw my money in the air. Whatever falls into the circle belongs to God, what falls outside the circle is mine.” The second man says, “my method is better, I also draw a circle on the ground, whatever falls outside the circle is mine, what falls inside the circle is God’s.” And the third man said, “you’re both wrong! My method is better! I throw all my money in the air, whatever God catches is His, whatever falls on the ground is mine.” We laugh at this humor, but in reality many Believers have their own method or thoughts about giving just as these three men. Not everyone is giving according to God’s principles and commandments!
I’ve ministered with many individuals that don’t believe in tithing! There reasoning: “it is not recorded in the New Testament, or I don’t have enough money to give God 10%. First and foremost, everything we think we own comes from God, our jobs, home, food, clothing, etc. We own nothing, absolutely nothing! So when asked to tithe 10% we are simply honoring God by giving back to Him what already belongs to Him. Secondly, we will have 90% left to do as we please! So you see, tithing is giving from the heart, it is a wonderful way of worshiping God, it is putting God first in our lives. He will not force anyone to give into His kingdom and we aren’t to give according to our own methods. When we are faithful to follow His principle in the area of tithing the rewards are tremendous and we will always have enough!
My personal testimony can attest to God’s goodness in the area of tithing. I was struggling financially as a single parent, which included credit card debt to 6 creditors. I prayed to Father God desperately for help! He rescued me from credit card debt by paying off 6 cards and taught me the principles found in Malachi 3:10 – “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.” As a Believer I wasn’t tithing so satan, the devourer, destroyed my finances! It was if my purse had holes in it and my paycheck kept slipping through those holes. I always had more month than money and raising three children with disappearing money was not a picnic!
As I studied Malachi 3:10 I discovered it was similar to Joseph’s story in the book of Genesis, when he was instructed by God to store up in Egypt corn and grain during the 7 years of plenty in preparation for years of famine to come. Joseph had all the people to bring a percentage of their crops to store up for the future needs. During our years of plenty via our jobs, etc., we are to tithe 10% to God storing up meat (blessings) for our future needs.
When the famine hit Egypt after 7 years of plenty, there was stored up enough grain for the entire nation and surrounding countries. In the kingdom of God when we bring in all our tithes into His storehouse we are storing up meat for those times when we are in need. Friends, we can not afford to not tithe! God promises to watch over our livelihood by rebuking the devourer and He promises to take care of our every need making us fruitful in all our endeavors.
The next time you hestiate about tithing let me leave you with Luke 6:38 (KJV) “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” We can not out give Father God, whatever we do for His kingdom in the area of tithing or giving to others, will be given back to us with good measure and men giving into our bosoms.
