“And he shall go before him in the spirit and the power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” (Luke 1:17)
Mary decided to stay with Elisabeth and Zacharias for the next three months. The two cousins had much to talk about! They were so overwhelmed with excitement with both of them being divinely blessed by God. They wanted to discuss the prophetic words spoken through them by the Spirit and what it meant and the dim outlook for their beloved nation Israel.
As Mary and Elisabeth reflected on the prophetic messages, they begin to remember certain readings spoken of by the Priest. One reading they remembered was from Isaiah “The Lord Himself shall give you a sign; behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). Elisabeth said I recall another prophetic message from Micah, it went something like, “…out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel” (Micah 5:2). Oh Mary, Elisabeth cried out this is all so exciting! Does this mean our Lord, the child you are carrying will be born to bring peace to our beloved nation Israel? I heard the scribes say long ago that Isaiah also said that the Messiah, our Lord, will bring peace and order to Israel and He will rule with justice and order (Isaiah 9:7).
Simultaneously they both said, what does this all mean? Elisabeth then shared with Mary the words written by Zacharias that the angel told him about the child she was carrying. The angel told Zacharias that his prayers had been heard and I his wife shall give birth to a son and to call his name John. The angel also said that this child will bring me joy and gladness and many will rejoice at this birth. Mary, the angel said my child, John, will be great in the sight of the Lord, so we are not to give him wine or strong drink. And, my child will be filled with the Holy Ghost while in my womb, that’s why he leaped in my womb when he heard your voice.
Mary there is more! He said many of the children of Israel shall my son turn to the Lord their God. My son, John, shall go before the Lord in the spirit of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and make ready a people prepared for the Lord (Luke 1:13-17). Mary do you know that this means? God has chosen us to carry sons for the future of Israel. Hope is our future! Hope will deliver us!
As Mary laid in bed that night, her mind kept her awake thinking of the future of her son and Elisabeth’s soon to be delivered son. She believed all the prophetic words spoken to her and to Zacharias by the angel Gabriel, but will her parents and Joseph.
Friends, what is God birthing in you! Are you believing Him for the results? Will you be brave as Mary was and trust God for protection and provision? Remember, when God calls us, He will provide and protect us. He is waiting for us to act by faith to believe. For God is our Hope!
