The Names of God – Jehovah

Today as we take our journey into the Word of God to discover unique names for God, we are going to learn about His name “Jehovah God.”  When using the name “Jehovah God” many associate this name with a religious organization and don’t want to use the name “Jehovah God.”  But, as we study the Word of God we will soon learn that God’s name Jehovah God is one that we want to call upon often.  So let’s do some further studying to discover the nature and character of God’s name Jehovah.

What does the name Jehovah actually mean?  It means the “relational God!”  The nature and character of God’s name Jehovah is that He is a God that is involved with His creation, a God that is living, a God that is real, a God that hears, a God that protects His children, a God that provides for His children, a God that is present.  To sum this up, Jehovah God is a God that is personal with His creation.

Names of God

In the Book of Genesis we see Jehovah God as a personal God:  He formed man, He planted a Garden for man, He provided food for man, and remember He walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the night, etc. (Genesis 1:26-31).  In the Book of Exodus Chapter 3, we discover God as a relational God when He calls out to Moses from a burning bush and tells Moses His plan to deliver “His children” from the hands of the mean Egyptians by using him (Moses).  Notice in verse 13 Moses says: “…Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, what is His name?  What shall I say unto them?”  God replies unto Moses “I AM THAT I AM: AND He said, thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”   This may sound strange to some of us that Moses asked God for His name, but I can remember as a child and growing into my adult years, I too had the same question, “who are you God? “ I knew God existed, but thought of Him in my mind as an unapproachable God.  We can know Him as Elohim (Our Creator) but not know Him as Jehovah God (the relational God).  It was 12 years into my life as a born again Believer when I learned God loved me, then I discovered God as “Jehovah God” my relational God.  I believe Moses too was asking God if He was approachable.

The Hebrew pronunciation for Jehovah God is “Yahweh,” which is also rendered as “I Am the existing One.”  Jehovah God is a living existing God!  Also, note that when you see LORD or GOD in all caps it is also translated as Jehovah God.  Jehovah God wants Himself known to His creation as a personal God who reveals Himself through our everyday life including our struggles. In Jeremiah 33:3 Jehovah God invites us to “call unto Him and He will answer.”  And in Jeremiah 23:24 we read that “we can’t hide from Jehovah God, He fills the heavens and the earth.”  In other words Jehovah God is everywhere.  Psalm 139 says it all!  God knows everything about us, even the thoughts we think and what we will speak before it comes out of our mouth.

Jehovah God is self-existing but we are not God.  We need Jehovah God on a daily basis right down to the very air we breathe, but guess what?  God provides for His creation even when we don’t ask.  Friends, Jehovah God delights in doing for His children, but He also delights in us seeking Him for our everyday needs and decision-making.  Jehovah God wants to have a personal one-on-one relationship with each of us and we are the only ones preventing it from happening.  Jeremiah 29:12-13 reads, “Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you, and ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.“  Seek Jehovah God with your whole heart and He will manifest Himself to you – He only goes where He is invited!  Don’t just know Him as Elohim, your Creator, become personal with Jehovah God – the relational God.  Don’t wait unto you are in a struggle to seek Jehovah God, invite Him into your daily routines, invite Him onto your job, invite Him on your walks, invite Him at your dinner table, invite Him on your vacations, invite Him to school!  Know Him as Jehovah God the existing relational God who loves to be personal with His Creation.

There are two ways to know Jehovah God personally as a relational God:  1) studying the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation learning the ways of God and 2) experientially going through personal trials teaches us Jehovah God’s love as a relational God.  When you come to know Jehovah God as a “relational God” watch how your life will change for the better!
