Knowing the God of the Universe’s many names, which make up His nature and character, is a great way to get to know Father God more intimately. He wants us to know that He is a God that is near, a God that hears, a God that sees, and a God that is involved in the lives of His creation; but He also wants us to know His power and providential care in our lives. In Exodus 33:13 Moses asked God to teach him His “ways.” The same God that taught Moses His ways is the same God that wants us to know Him and knowing God’s names gives us a great description and illustration of the powerful and Mighty God we serve.
On our journey into the Word of God studying God’s names, we are going to learn God’s name Adonai. Adonai means the “God who Rules.” Many believe that men in government are in control of the world, but today we will learn that “God is still in control,” which include earthly government – worldwide! We are all aware that when someone designs or makes something such as an automobile, an appliances, a toy, etc., that the designer knows best how that invention operates, well the same holds true with God as Creator of the universe. He knows best how we operate, which the majority of the time is unjustly toward each other. So let’s thank God that He still rules the Universe with His mercy.
Adonai is a plural name denoting that God is a plural being. He is only one God with a plural character – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Adonai is recorded at least 400 times in the Bible and means “having dominion, rulership and ownership!” In other words God is Elohim (Creator) of the Universe and He is Adonai (Ruler) of the Universe also known as Jehovah God (a relational God) wanting to have a personal relationship with His creation – us!
For further clarity, God declares to us in Psalm 97:5 “that He is Lord or Adonai to the whole earth,” in Psalm 50:10 God declares “the cattle and all the beast are Mine,” and Haggai 2:8 God declares “the sliver is mine, and the God is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.” God reveals Himself in His Word and reveals Himself visibility through nature as owner and Creator of all creation. To identify Adonai in the Bible as “ruler,” when we see Lord with an uppercase L and the remaining letters lowercase in the Bible, this is the Hebrew definition for Adonai.
Studying the life of Abraham is a great example of how multifaceted the names of God are when relating to His names. For example: Genesis 12:1-3 we read “the LORD (Jehovah God) said unto Abram, get thee out of your country…. And I (Adonai) will make of thee a nation; I (Adonai) will bless you; I (Adonai) will protect you. There were other names that Abraham called upon, which we will learn in future lessons, but for now know that the same Jehovah God and Adonai that Abraham trusted and believed in is the same God who wants to have a relationship with us.
Father God’s ownership of His creation is much more than stating He owns us. God’s ownership reveals through His ways and name Adonai that His ownership comes with responsibilities. With God’s declaration of ownership, He states in His Word His responsibility to provide, protect, guard, lead, forgive, etc., for His creation. In Matthew 6:25-34 Jehovah God encourages us not to worry for He has taken responsibility for our needs and when we doubt, we are to look at nature to see how He fulfills His promises by providing for nature and the fowls of the air. By faith we are to believe in God for our daily needs. Now before we jump to conclusions and wonder why then is there so much chaos in the world, let me remind you that Elohim (Creator) has given mankind the ability of “choice!” We can chose to believe in God and accept His responsibility of divine help in our lives or we can chose to believe in self. But, know either way Adonai causes the rain and sunshine to come forth upon all.
Just as Jehovah God called and invited Abraham into His Kingdom (Genesis 12:1), He calls out to every man and woman, regardless of age and invites them to go on a wonderful journey with Him. Many gladly answer the call, while others reject the call, the chose is ours to make. Jehovah God will never force anyone to choose His kingdom, or to have a relationship with Him. We must be reminded that Jehovah only goes where He is invited!
Holy Spirit informs us in Ephesians 1:3 that Adonai has blessed Believers with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ, but in order to receive all that God has for us, we must meet Him in the spiritual realm by believing and trusting in Adonai as “Lord of all” in our lives. Unfortunately, we humans like to believe we are in total control of our own lives until we find ourselves in difficult situations. We need to learn, and be constantly reminded, that God (Adonai) is ruler of the universe and is “all knowing” about everything in this universe. With this knowledge humans, especially Believers, should give Adonai the reigns of their lives for a victorious journey on earth. Before we make any decisions, such as marriage, education, employment, starting a business, raising our children, etc., we should consult with Adonai and wait for His advice. He is our Creator and knows what is best for our lives. Now this does take away our choice to decide for ourselves, this means we are trusting God to help us make better choices. The “love” Jehovah God has for His creation is beyond understanding, so don’t try to figure it out, instead believe in your heart that God loves you unconditionally and wants to have a personal relationship with you, yes you!
