Questions About Heaven #1

Heaven has always been a great mystery for both Believers and non-Believers, so for the next couple of weeks, I will be posting questions about heaven.

Question #1:  Does heaven really exist – is it physical, spiritual, or symbolic?

Growing up I imagined heaven as being spiritual.  After salvation I believed heaven to be somewhat physical, but those in heaven floated around with nothing to do but sit on clouds.  What do you believe?  You can ask this same question to ten people and more than likely end up with 10 different opinions.  So, instead of opinions, let’s go directly to the source that has the answers we need – the Bible.

We read in Genesis 1:1 that God created the heaven and the earth.  Both heaven

and earth are created.  That means, just as earth is physical, heaven is physical.

Jesus taught the disciples to pray:  Our Father which art in heaven (Matt. 6:9), revealing to the reader God resides in heaven.  In Matthew 5:34 we are commanded not to swear by heaven because it is God’s throne.  (But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne🙂  Heaven is as real as the flesh on our bodies.

In First Peter 3:22 we read that Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God.  (Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him🙂   God dwells in heaven and Jesus is seated at God’s right hand of authority.  We read in John 14:2-3 Jesus telling the disciples “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.   And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also:” Heaven has buildings and activity. Notice it states Jesus has gone to prepare us a place.  This means heaven is a physical place.  Heaven is a place Jesus traveled to and heaven is filled with necessities we are familiar with.

In Geneses 28:13 we read about Jacob watching angel’s ascending and descending from heaven.  This means angels can come and go between heaven and earth.  They visit earth!  The angels in heaven are actively involved in the affairs of mankind.  It is revealed to readers in Isaiah 4:4-17 that one angel (Lucifer or satan) caused a rebellion in heaven and tempted 1/3 of the other angels to follow him.  They were expelled from heaven by God and currently Lucifer (satan) and those fallen angels reside on earth tempting mankind.  They Infiltrate nations, government, schools, homes, teenagers, marriages, etc., causing all evil to rage throughout the world.

Many scriptures in the Book of Revelation state heaven is where God’s throne is and there is constant activity occurring in heaven.  There are many more scriptures too numerous to list that give us beautiful images of heaven, activity in heaven and what heaven should mean for Believers. I personally believe heaven is real and that one day, heaven will be visible to the eye.  Heaven is the reward for faithful Believers of Jesus Christ.  I believe one day soon we will see the face of God in Jesus Christ, for Jesus himself said, “if you see me, you see God” (John 14:4-21).  The question is what image of heaven has been revealed to you through the Word of God?
