“For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: He hath no form or comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him.” (Isaiah 53:2)
As Mary was preparing the evening meal, she realized months have passed since Gabriel’s visitation with her! Feeling an urge to touch her stomach, she stopped what she was doing and gently touched her slightly bulging tummy, wondering “what He will look like.” She suddenly remembered part of a prophecy spoken by the prophet Isaiah that said “he has no form or comeliness,” (Isaiah 53:2) what does that mean, she thought? How should I raise God’s royal Son? Question after question pondered her mind! But one thing still remained, when and how will I tell my parents, and what about Joseph, how will I tell him? Will they believe me? Will they believe the child I carry is the Son of the Most High God?
Mary thought to herself, the priests and scribes have been sharing with us Sabbath after Sabbath the many prophecies spoken of by all the prophets of a coming Messiah. They said a Messiah will come and restore Israel! Our nation has been waiting 400 years with the hope of Israel being restored. I remember the Priest reading the prophecy spoken of by the prophet Zechariah also about the coming Messiah and how He will rebuild the temple of the Lord and that He will rule in power and peace (Zechariah 6:13). And what about Isaiah’s prophecy which read the coming Messiah will restore the preserved Israel and give a light to the Gentiles (Isaiah 49:6). Many more teachings from the prophets flooded Mary’s mind about the coming Messiah, which made her realize what she is carrying is the child of the prophecies. She suddenly felt a flow of confidence quicken her spirit as she thought, I will wait upon my Lord for the right time to release this wonderful news to my family and to Joseph. In the meantime, she thought, there’s one thing I need to do first!
