“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

Many of us wrestle with fear. Fear of failure; fear of people; fear of wars and world events; fear of lack; fear of poor health; and some have a fear of everything. Fear has torment and will keep the prisoner bound in the prison of their mind preventing them from living a victorious Christian life as Father God desires for His children.
Notice that 2 Timothy 1:7 reads “God has not given us the spirit of fear. The AMP Bible Version lists fear as “timidity or cowardice of fear.” Paul is explaining to Timothy fear is not of God! So, the question is where does this ungodly fear come from? If you guessed the enemy satan/devil, then you are correct. Satan attacks our mind with doubt, fear or cowardice, and unbelief. Paul encourages Timothy and the children of God to live a fearless life by stating what Father God has given them: power; love; and a sound mind.
Does this mean Believers will have a life free of trials and tribulations? No! We will go through trying times, but our victory is found in the power, love and sound mind that God has given us.
Power: Our power comes from the LORD. In Luke 10:19 the Lord states He has given us all authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, satan (Luke 10:19). How do we activate this power? Through the Word of God! The Word of God is “alive and active” and will perform what it is intended to do (remember the Word is Jesus).
The majority of our trials and tribulations are devised from satan. When we speak the Word of God over our trials, God says satan will flee- the Word has power. Our power also comes from God Himself. As we seek Him in pray for help, He will make a way of escape for us (1 Corinthians 10:13). We don’t have to fear anything or anyone, God has given us the tools we need to fight the battle in our minds – His power; His Word and our Prayers.
Love: This is one of greatest gifts God has given to mankind. Unfortunately, the majority of us don’t know how to love each other without attaching some strings or bait for them to receive our love.
We are instructed to “love others as we love ourselves!” If we have a wounded soul, we will love others from our hurt. 1 Timothy 4:18 reads, “there is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” If we have a flawed image or understanding of God’s love or living in guilt or shame, we will continue to function in the mode of fear hurting ourselves and others. This means we are not perfected in God’s love.
God’s love is pure and unconditional! No matter what we do or say, it will not stop God from loving us. God says as we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us (James 4:8). We do this by asking God to heal and deliver us from the “spirit of fear” and to teach us His love and how to love Him and others.
Sound Mind: We have a sound mind when we hold fast to the truth of God’s Word; this will shield us from the lies of satan. The AMP Bible Version states a sound mind is “a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control.”
A sound mind prevents us from thinking negative thoughts or having our minds constantly wandering in the past with hurts done to us, or mistake we made. Philippians 4:8 gives us the answer for possessing a sound mind: “…whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Keeping our minds pure with good things, such as the goodness of the LORD and praises for His goodness, will destroy the enemy of fear and strengthen our spirits.
Don’t allow the enemy satan to have any more space in your mind. Trials will come our way, but Father God is faithful to deliver us. He delivered Daniel when he was in the lion’s den. Daniel was perfected in God’s love knowing that he had nothing to fear. Why? He believed in God and God’s Word, Daniel knew God would deliver him – and God did!
Be strong my friends and of good courage and surrender all your fears to God for healing and deliverance so that you will possess power, love and a sound mind.
In your journal:
- Write what is preventing you from receiving Father God’s love. Surrender that fear to Father God, He understands.
- Write a prayer asking Father God to heal you from the spirit of fear.
- Now list your fears as a testimony for when you surrendered them to Father God.
Today & Everyday Proclaim:
- Fear is my enemy. Faith is my victory.
- Today, I refuse to allow my mind to be dictated by fear.
- Father God loves me with an everlasting love.
- I will rest in the LOVE of Father God.
The Word of God has the power to transform and heal anyone who puts his/her trust in Father God for healing.
